Getting Water to You

Water Supply and Capacity

TVWD’s water distribution system includes 761 miles of pipeline, ranging from 2 to 60 inches in diameter and 12 pumping stations that move water to higher elevations within the District.

TVWD sources its water from two primary suppliers: the Portland Water Bureau and the Joint Water Commission, ensuring ample capacity to meet average and peak daily demand.

  • Portland Water Bureau: A 60-inch gravity-flow main delivers water to TVWD from Portland’s Powell Butte Reservoir, with a capacity of 42.3 million gallons per day (MGD). A standby pumping system provides capacity of 20 MGD to back up the gravity flow main.
  • Joint Water Commission (JWC): The JWC provides up to an additional 10 MGD, ensuring a robust and flexible water supply.
Water Storage

TVWD’s water system includes 22 active covered reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of approximately 65 million gallons. Some of these reservoirs are located underground, with community parks, tennis courts, and sports fields built on top.

All reservoirs and major pumping stations are equipped with advanced telemetry control systems for efficient and reliable water distribution.

System Security

The District’s water system is monitored 24/7 to ensure safe and consistent operations. Using a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, staff continuously track water flows, pressure, and quality, while also monitoring for security alarms. If anything unusual is detected, an alert notifies operators, who respond quickly to resolve potential issues.
