Unapproved Backflow Assemblies

More and more, backflow assemblies that don’t meet state regulations are being sold online. These may cost less up front, but they aren’t certified to protect your drinking water - and they won’t pass your required annual inspection.

How can I tell if a backflow assembly meets regulations?
  • Approved backflow assemblies include key information such as make, model, size, and a unique serial number.
  • Unapproved backflow assemblies may be missing key information such as the make, model, or a serial number.
How can I be sure to purchase an approved assembly?

A licensed irrigation technician or plumber can help install an assembly that meets all approved requirements. If you choose to handle the purchase or installation yourself, make sure to:

  • Look for the details listed above (make, model, serial number, size)
  • Buy only from a reputable distributor
What if I've already purchased an unapproved assembly?

If you’ve purchased and installed an unapproved assembly, it will need to be replaced with an approved one to stay in compliance.
