What is TVWD doing?

To improve the reliability and resiliency of the water system for future generations, Tualatin Valley Water District (TVWD) will be conducting a vital water infrastructure project that will include peplacing 1,600 feet of the current six-inch water main under NW Meadowgrass Drive – from NW 174th Avenue to NW Somerset Drive, including 171st and 172nd places – with a new eight-inch ductile iron water main.

Increasing the size and strength of this section of water main – which is responsible for delivering clean, high-quality drinking water to your property and neighborhood – offers significant benefits, including:

  • Improved Water Quality: Larger water mains allow for better flow and circulation of water, which can help prevent stagnation.
  • Enhanced Reliability: Larger water mains can handle higher pressures and volumes and can be less prone to breaks and leaks. By reducing the frequency of disruptions due to maintenance or repairs, communities can rely on a more consistent water supply.
  • Greater Fire Protection Coverage: Larger water mains can deliver higher volumes of water, which is crucial for firefighting efforts.
  • Resistance to Earthquakes: Installing a seismic resilient water main means it's designed to withstand the ground movement and shaking that can happen during earthquakes.

The project is a $500,000 investment in this area of the water system and funded through regular water bill payments.

Timeline

  • Week of May 20, 2024: Preparation for the upcoming project - including potholing or digging small holes to locate existing utilities - will begin.
  • Week of May 27, 2024 (after the Memorial Day Holiday): Construction of the new water main is scheduled to begin.
  • August 2024: Project completion.

How does this affect me?

  • Work Hours: Per City of Beaverton municipal code, work will occur Monday through Friday from 7 am to 5 pm and outside of those times in the staging area, as needed.
  • Staging: Equipment, tools, and materials may be stored on nearby streets overnight.
  • Large equipment: Front loaders, excavators, and dump trucks will be used during this project.
  • Impacts: Properties near the project site may temporarily experience noise, dust, vibration, and traffic delays.
  • Traffic Impacts: Your street may be closed to all but local traffic during construction hours. Crews will try to keep driveways accessible, but you may have to park on a side street sometimes during construction hours.
  • Planned Water Service Interruptions: Your water service may intermittently be disrupted for several hours. If we need to shut off your water, we will hang a notice on your front door at least 24 hours before the temporary shutoff.
  • Services: Mail, garbage, and delivery services will have access.
  • Road Restoration: Temporary road surfaces will be maintained until final road restoration can occur, based on weather.
  • Drone Surveys: During the project, TVWD may fly a drone to conduct regular aerial surveys of the construction site and monitor progress. The goal of these surveys are to provide high-resolution images and videos.
  • Responsive Staff: TVWD engineers, inspectors, and community engagement staff will be on-site often and can assist with construction concerns. For additional questions or concerns, email Communications@TVWD.gov or call 503-848-3000.
